Raymond Hood

In reading about Raymond Hood, I found a lot of similarities in terms of his design approach. For example, he establishes an approach for skyscrapers that can be related to SOM. He incorporates the public view perspective in the features of a building while also tackling the main program of that building. He condenses multiply activities into one building with layers for each activities to take place. He turns his City of Towers fantasy into reality with from an irrational dream, like the Central Methodist Episcopal Church, into a rational series of steps that create a skyscraper. In a way he is similar to the Gray’s style of design. He takes a traditional office space and adds his touch of modernism by incorporating spheres, colors on the facade, multiply layers for function and purpose, and etc. Based on that approach, he then has mastered the process of mass producing skyscrapers for whatever function they desire, similarly to SOM who have mastered the process of making buildings.

  1. Interesting take on Hood’s work. To more clearly understand how you’re interpreting his approach, it would have been good to read precise quotes from the readings, as the majority of your comments come from personal connections. And in a similar vein, it’s not easy to understand your comparison with SOM, as their oeuvre is quite wide, without explicit theories.
