Week 7

Heidegger’s discusses how people/dwellers interact with their respective building. He analyzes how “a dweling is the manner in which mortals are on the earth” (Heidegger 650). The thinking that heidegger is refering to this relationship between the two. How he describes the building is he basically says the feeling of dwelling and what does that mean for the building. Kahns’s writing also ties into this because of how he basically states a building is defined by its personality/character which I would argue is basically the same thing as this dweller /dweller relationship. To me this is what anti-functionalism is all about. Previously we have read like in Rossi the purpose of a building is what defines its space. Vesley brings this home even more so in his lecture which his disneyland analogy which remind me of how fantasy novels were explained to me. Basically in both of these worlds, if you will, there are no rules and laws to the society but even so how we as humans are able to distuingish the differences because even these crazy ideas they still relate to these new ones.

  1. Liz, I think you’ve hit a couple points on the head, but I’d like to read a more structured response to the readings. For example, which phrases/terms/sentences provoke your comparison between Rossi, Kahn, and Vesely? And certainly Vesely’s statement on the possible worth of Disneyland must be taken into account when translating this idea to fantasy novels, no? Regarding your mention of dwelling, it’s too vast a subject to discuss in the whole, so you’d be better served to discuss and elaborate on a specific aspect. Too broad a discussion…
