Analogical architecture

I liked the Rossi reading about analogical architecture because it explained, in detail using examples of analogical work, analogy within the city.

Rossi talks about Zurich University and how he combined the idea of a public building with a large centrally illuminated space. I couldn’t help but notice how he was describing the early works of a plaza, to be specific an indoor plaza. Another example he named was Gallaratese Quarter. The whole building may be seen as an elevated construction anchored to the ground. This concept is similar to the Golden Lane Project by the Smithsons in terms of an elevated ground or plan. The social services building was developed on a centralized plan, focusing on a large open space with various rooms arranged above. This can be related to one of Corbusier’s 5 points, in particular the free facade because of the independent structure within itself.
