The Architectural Group of the 20th Century

One of the most prominent architects in the 20th century formed an association where they can share their ideas. The group, known as CIAM, have held multiple conferences across Europe, where they brainstorm their ideas of designing the plans of how cities function and how to improve cities by building larger open spaces to residential areas and looking through the city plan in a three dimensional plan.

CIAM during their conference held in Athens have discussed the main functions of cities. They categorize the functions as dwelling, recreation, work, transportation and legacy of history. They discussed the problems that are currently facing these categories and recommended what cities should implement and improve living in the cities. (Zdroj n.d.)

CIAM later dissolved into Team X, which continued to evolve in creating new solutions in buildings, cities and houses. They mark the history of modernist architecture in the 20th century. The people who were part of Team X had a much stronger connection when discussing throughout these topics, even some students who were thought from Team X members consider them as family. (The Beginning of Team 10 n.d.)

Fumihiko Maki in his book “Investigations in Collective Form” bases his architectural concepts on the members of CIAM and Team X. Maki categorizes city planning as a compositional form, a megastructure and a group form.  The forms are concepts that architects use the components of the buildings to construct their function. These concepts were also implemented in city planning, where cities are organized to be more compact and efficient. (Maki 1964)

CIAM, later as Team X, remarks the key design elements of modern architecture. From planning of an efficient city to using components to construct a function of a building, Team X has shown the key design concept of contemporary architecture that is still used today. Although every city is built in it’s own unique way, they lay out plans to construct cities to be more efficient, compact and environmentally friendly.
