Transitions

After reading the works of Lloyd, Corbusier, Van der roh and Gropius it became evident that one of the big things that influenced the words of these men were transitions. For Lloyd and Corbusier it was mainly the how the way life was changing. Corbusier said it best when he discussed the three types of living: city dwellers, suburban dwellers and commuters. Both Lloyd and Corbusier commented on how a man from the city lives his life based on the inside of the home rather and would instead neglect the land, in fact Lloyd specifically commented on that very issue. Gropius and Van der Roh’s transitions were more political and ideological based. In the turn of the century they were waking up to world where new ideas were condemned as traitorous. For example Gropius remarks how by solely approaching things nontraditional made him vulnerable to attacks by anyone (Communists, Nazis and Americans). Which is ultimately what lead to what Van Der Roh wrote about and how the Nazi’s just shut down the Bauhaus.
